Tornadoes Split Sixth Doubleheader of the Season with 12-9 Loss & 7-4 Win
August 16, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
For the first time this season, the Tornadoes lost the first game of a doubleheader, dropping a 12-9 contest. They also won their first game two of a twinbill with a 7-4 triumph, both over the Newark Bears at the HIP on Tuesday. Worcester is now 6-6 this year in doubleheaders.
In game one, the Bears scored seven runs in the seventh inning, including four with two outs. Burt Reynolds hit a three-run homerun and Ryan Walsh followed with a solo shot. It marked the second time this season the Tornadoes gave up back-to-back homers. (They've gone back-to-back themselves on three separate occasions.)
Rick Asadoorian (1-4) picked up the loss and Albert Ayala the blown save. Asadoorian gave up a handful of runs on four hits and a hit batter. Ayala allowed both of the homers as his only hits and runs coughed up. Zach Zuercher went six innings in the no-decision, striking out eight, walking one and allowing five runs on five hits (and a hit batter).
Both Mark Minicozzi and Alex Trezza finished the first game with multiple-RBI performances. Minicozzi recorded three RBI on two of his three hits (and scored twice), while Trezza had a two-run homer and a two-run double.
The Tornadoes scored first in the opener of the day (and the series), making it 1-0 after Abraham Nunez's RBI double to plate Alex Nunez (who was a homer short of the cycle). Newark scored four times in the third, but Trezza pulled Worcester within a run during the fourth. In each of the next two innings, the Tornadoes scored three runs to take a 9-5 lead.
Chris Rollins earned the win and Mikey Mehlich the save in the victory for Newark.
In the second game of the evening, the Bears struck for a run in three of the first four innings, but the Tornadoes took the lead for good in the fourth. Worcester put a five-spot on the board in the bottom of the fourth frame, including three runs that scored on walks with the bases loaded.
Minicozzi, Trezza and Nick Salotti singled to load the bases. Ryan Crespi, Tony Patane and Cam Monger all reached on four balls, with Patane's and Crespi's both coming on four pitches. After Alex Nunez reached on a 6-2 fielder's choice, Abraham Nunez knocked a run in with another fielder's choice. Monger came home on a wild pitch to give the Tornadoes the eventual winning run.
The Bears left the bases loaded in the seventh after former Worcester outfielder Danny Santiesteban hit a solo homer to pull Newark within three.
Ryan Bicondoa earned the win (4-1), pitching five innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and four strikeouts. Nick Serino pitched a 1-2-3, two-strikeout sixth. Matt McDonald gave up three hits and a run while walking one and striking out one Bears batter.
The Tornadoes lead the season series 7-6. The second to last game of the year between the clubs is Wednesday at 7:05pm, when Shawn Gilblair and Brian Parker square off of the first time. The gates at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field open at 6:00, and Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM begins at 6:50.
