New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, N.J. - Myron Leslie drove in a pair of runs, but the New York Federals snapped a 10-game losing streak as they handed the New Jersey Jackals an 8-4 loss on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series at Yogi Berra Stadium.
The Jackals wasted no time getting their bats going, opening the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI double by Mike DeJesus and a run-scoring single by Myron Leslie following a leadoff walk by Sean Smith.
The Federals quickly countered, however, plating three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. With the bases loaded and one out, rookie Scott Dubben fired a two-run single just inside first base for his first two career RBIs to even the score at 2-2. A sacrifice fly by the next batter, Mike Levy, gave New York a 3-2 lead. The Federals never trailed after that point.
New Jersey evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third on Leslie's second RBI single of the night, which again plated Smith after a hit by pitch.
The Federals jumped out in front for good in the sixth inning, when they scored an unearned run. They plated two more in the seventh and one more in the eighth to grab a 7-3 lead.
The Jackals got one back in the bottom of the eighth when Kris Sanchez doubled and came around to score on a pair of wild pitches. New York closed the scoring in the ninth on an RBI-single by Sandy DeLeon.
Neither starter factored in the decision as Shaun Ellis went five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits for New Jersey while Federals' starter James Kukucka yielded three runs on four hits over four innings. John Masklee (1-0) earned the win by tossing a scoreless fifth inning as the Federals used five relievers to hold the Jackals in check. Steve Fox (0-2) absorbed the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
The Jackals and Federals play the middle contest of their three-game series on Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends right-hander Michael Moore (4-0, 4.29 ERA) to the mound against righty Luis Pardo (0-9, 6.29 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
JACKAL BITES: Jared Locke was ejected by home plate umpire Rob Dickinson following the final out of the top of the eighth inning.
