Can-Am League Game Recaps

August 16, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Quebec 3, Brockton 2 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

Capitales DH Mitch Delaney hit a two-run, second-inning homer to put his club on top, 2-0. And - despite Brockton tying the score with one-run fourth and fifth innings - Quebec never trailed. The homer was Delaney's only hit of the night, as the designated hitter went 1-for-2 in the seven-inning contest. The Rox tied the score in the fifth on a Melvin Falu double, but three walks and a fielder's choice for Quebec in the sixth gave the Capitales the win. Quebec relief pitcher Jeff Duda, who registered one and two-thirds innings of one hit baseball, earned the victory for Quebec.

Quebec 4, Brockton 1 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

The Capitales got a complete-game, three-hitter from Bryan Rembisz and plated four early runs to take a 4-1 win over Brockton in Game 2. Rembisz had five strikeouts against three walks in the victory, his sixth of the year. Quebec's first two runs came on a two-run shot from 3B Seth Henry in the second inning. Henry went 2-for-3 on the night. The Rox' only run came in the final inning at the expense of a 6-4-3 double play. Capitales 2B Josh Colafemina went 2-for-3, joining Henry as the only two players to pick up more than one hit.

Newark 12, Worcester 9 (Game 1 - 7 innings)

Trailing 9-5 entering the seventh inning and with Game 2 with the Tornadoes on the horizon, Newark could have folded and focused its effort on the next contest. That did not happen. The Bears scored seven runs in the inning to take a 12-9 lead that would hold for the Game 1 victory. The last four runs came on back-to-back home runs from Burt Reynolds and Ryan Walsh, turning a 9-8 deficit into a 12-9 lead. Reynolds went 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI on two home runs. For the Tornadoes, 3B Mark Minicozzi went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Worcester 7, Newark 4 (Game 2 - 7 innings)

The Bears loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but then Tornadoes reliever Matt McDonald got Brandon Watson to fly out to end the game with Worcester on top, 7-4. McDonald gave up a run and three hits in one inning of work. The Tornadoes drew three consecutive bases-loaded walks in the fourth inning on their way to a five-run frame that put them on top, 5-3, a lead they would not surrender. Bears CF Danny Santiesteban led all batters in hits, going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. But the rest of the Newark lineup batted in only two runs, going 6-for-22. For the Tornadoes, 3B Mark Minicozzi went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Rockland 7, Pittsfield 5

The Boulders got a first-inning lead-off homer from CF Ray Stokes, put together three runs in the frame and never trailed in their 7-5 win over Pittsfield. It was Stokes' only official at-bat of the game, with the rest of his night consisting off three walks, including a hit by pitch. Colonials 3B Billy Mottram tied the score on a two-run third-inning homer. But the Boulders answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI Ryde Rodriguez double, leading the rest of the way. Mottram went 2-for-5 with the homer accounting for both of his RBI.

New York 8, New Jersey 4

The Federals got production from the top of their lineup to the bottom, picking up eight runs on 14 hits an defeating New Jersey, 8-4. Leadoff CF Stephen Pinto went 3-for-5 and batted in a run, while his teammate in the eight hole, SS Scott Dubben, did him one better, going 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. The Jackals went on top early thanks to a two-run first. But the Federals answered quickly with a three-run second and didn't trail the rest of the game. After New Jersey tied the score at 3-3 in the third, New York went on top for good in the sixth. The Federals used six pitchers, the third of whom, Alex Foltz, picked up the win after throwing a perfect sixth inning.
