Tornadoes Split Fifth Doubleheader
August 10, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
For the fifth time in as many doubleheaders this season, the Tornadoes won the evening's first game and lost the second after holding a middle-inning lead.
Worcester won the first game 4-0 over the Brockton Rox thanks to an opposite-field two-run homer for Mark Minicozzi, an RBI single by Tony Patane and a solo homer from Alex Trezza. Zach Zuercher extended his scoreless innings streak to 20.1 innings with 5.1 frames of shutout ball and earned the victory (11-4). The loss went to Rox starter Mike Smith (8-5), who also pitched 5.1 innings.
Albert Ayala entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth as the Tornadoes led 3-0. The righty setup man retired both batters he faced, and Nick Serino had a perfect seventh inning to clinch the victory.
Game two belonged to Brockton, 3-1. The Rox scored three unanswered unearned runs on three Worcester miscues. Abraham Nunez had an RBI double to score Alex Nunez in the bottom of the first, but Dan Barbero came home to tie the game in the fifth. In the sixth inning, two Tornadoes errors plus a Tucker Nathans RBI single knocked the go-ahead runs in.
The final game of the series is on Thursday night at 7:05pm. The gates open at 6:00, and Tornadoes Pre-Game Live on USTREAM begins at 6:50.
