Tornadoes Record Second Straight Two-Hitter, Defeat Federals 9-0

July 31, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Ryan Bicondoa threw the second-consecutive two-hit shutout for the Tornadoes in a 9-0 win over the New York Federals on Sunday afternoon. The side-arming righty was perfect through three innings, and faced just one batter over the minimum in the Tornadoes' fifth straight win.

The victory pulled Worcester into a tie for first place with the Brockton Rox in the second half of the 2011 CanAm League season. After Brockton's 5-0 loss earlier in the day, the Tornadoes jumped over .500 for the first time this year and improved their second half record to 10-4.

Tony Patane was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in the Worcester win, while Mark Minicozzi added an opposite-field two-run homer in the seventh to close the game's scoring. Every Tornadoes player had at least one hit.

In his complete-game effort, Bicondoa struck five Federals battters out and walked none. He threw 80 pitches for his third win of the year (3-1). Ryan's complete game was the second all season for Worcester and the second shutout in as many days. Zach Zuercher had a two-hitter on Saturday. Before this weekend, the Tornadoes pitching staff as a whole had just one shutout, a 2-0 victory over the Newark Bears on June 14.

Worcester sent eight men to the plate in two different innings. In the second, Nick Salotti, Ryan Crespi and Patane all scored on Patane's two-RBI base knock and a triple by Cameron Monger. In the sixth, five Tornadoes players hit singles, with Minicozzi, Salotti, Patane and Monger all scoring.

Sunday's win wrapped up a ten-game home stand for the Tornadoes, their longest of the season. Worcester ended the stretch at 7-3, and will take on the Rockland Boulders in Ramapo for a three-game set starting Monday. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm, with pre-game coverage on USTREAM beginning at 6:50 with Tornadoes Pre-Game Live.
