Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER - For the second-consecutive day, the Tornadoes' game vs. Sussex was suspended, this time in Game 2 after the Skyhawks held on for a 10-4 rain-suspended Game 1 victory.
The first game was the conclusion of Tuesday night's suspended affair, which was called due to heavy rain and unplayable field conditions in the middle of the fourth inning. An inning and a half were then played in Game 2 before the same situation occurred; after a 46-minute rain delay, the game was called off and will be resumed at Sussex next week at a date and time to be determined.
B.J. Weed had an impressive day with homers from both sides of the plate, a solo shot batting left handed in Game 1 and a two-run shot batting righty in Game 2. Omar Pena also had a Game 1 sixth-inning long ball in the losing effort while Chandler Barnard was strong on the mound, needing only 60 pitches to get through four innings while allowing one (earned) run on five hits.
Worcester got off to the fast start in Game 2 with a Scott Grimes leadoff double and Weed's second home run of the day for the 2-0 lead. The torrential rain started in the top of the second, leading to the grounds' crew covering the field in the middle of the inning, which ended the night and the series.
Earlier in the day, the Tornadoes fought hard in the completion of Tuesday's suspended game to cut into a 9-0 deficit, but eventually fell by the 10-4 final. Barnard's gutsy effort allowed the Tornadoes offense to cut into the Sussex lead with a pair of home runs to make it 9-3.
Sussex got one back when Kevin Rios beat out a double play ball, scoring Chris Brown for the 10-3 lead. Worcester tacked on the game's final run when Chuck Jeroloman crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the eighth.
After a day off, Worcester remains at home for a pair vs. Nashua. There will be a spectacular fireworks show on Friday night and Saturday is Irish Night!
