Brockton, Kelly Shut Down Pride; 5-2

(Brockton, Mass., July 23, 2008) Brockton Rox starting pitcher John Kelly (5-4) delivered eleven strike outs in a gem against the Nashua Pride to lead the Brockton over the Nashua, 5-2, in front of 3,128 fans at Campanelli Stadium.

Kelly improved to 3-0 against Nashua on the season, going eight innings, giving up two runs (one earned), on five hits, two walks and eleven strike outs. Closer Gerald Dunn notched his 14th save of the season and second against the Pride in as many nights pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Rox designated hitter Jason Colson was 2-for-4 in the game with a home run, double, RBI, and two runs scored, while first baseman Derek David went 1-for-1 with a two-run single after coming into the game as a pinch runner in the seventh. Left fielder Dennis Abreu finished the game 2-for-4 for the Rox, extending his hitting streak two 23 consecutive games. Abreu drove in the game winning run with an RBI double in the eighth inning.

Pride starter Lance Stevens did not factor in a decision, lasting six innings, giving up two runs (one earned), on four hits, five walks and three strike outs. Pride reliever Mike Joyce suffered the loss pitching one inning, giving up one run, on two hits and two strike outs. Rich Garces dealt an inning of work, giving up a pair of runs on two hits.

The Pride scored both its runs without notching an RBI in the game. Designated hitter Mike Torres scored on a two-base throwing error by Brockton shortstop Dominic Ramos in the fourth inning. Torres finished the game 1-for-4. Second baseman Ismael Castro went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored off of a wild pitch.

The Pride and Rox will complete their three game series on Thursday night, at 7:05pm, when Nashua send's right hander Isaac Burkett to the mound. Brockton will counter with left hander Rolando Viera.
