Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, Mass. - August 21, 2011) - The Worcester Tornadoes (21-11, 42-37) finished off a weekend sweep of the Brockton Rox (20-14, 46-34) Sunday evening after jumping out to an early lead against Freddy Flores (6-8), before hanging on in the later innings for a 6-4 win.
Flores (4.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 3 HR) struggled from the start as Worcester plated three runs in the first inning on back-to-back doubles from Abraham Nunez and Chris Colabello, followed by Nick Salotti's league leading 21st two-run blast one out later.
Tony Patane connected for a solo homer, his first of the season, in the second and then Colabello made it 5-0 with a round-tripper in the third.
Alex Trezza added one more tally when he knocked home Cameron Monger in the fifth, chasing Flores, who left the game leading the league with 17 home runs allowed.
From the fifth inning on, the Rox got stellar relief from Zach Woods that would keep his team in the game, but Brockton struggled to find timely hitting down the stretch. Woods finished the evening tossing four and 1/3 scoreless frames, allowing just two hits, while walking two and striking out one.
Trailing 6-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth frame, the Rox closed the gap with a run on an RBI groundout from Mike Torres that scored Dominic Ramos and cut the lead to three.
Ramos scored again in the seventh on an RBI double from Chris Valencia and the Rox went on to load the bases with only one out, but Nick Serino entered from the Worcester bullpen to quiet things down.
Serino tossed two shutout innings and struck out five as the Rox stranded the bases loaded in the seventh and then left two men aboard in the eighth. In total, Brockton left ten men on base, including six in the final three innings.
The heart of the order struggled mightily in the affair as Keith Brachold, Shawn Williams and Melvin Falu went a combined 0-for-14 with six strike outs.
Torres and Ramos each had three hits in the game, with Torres knocking in two runs and Ramos scoring a game high three times. Jeremy Hunt, Dan Barbero and Valencia each had a pair of hits in the ballgame.
Ryan Bicondoa (5-1) picked up the victory, scattering eleven hits and allowing four runs in six and 1/3 innings. Albert Ayala (3) notched his second save of the series and third of the season after recording the final two outs in the ninth.
The Rox have the day off on Monday before opening up a three game series and a week long roadtrip on Tuesday evening at Provident Bank Park with the Rockland Boulders. Julian Sampson (8-4, 3.88) looks to continue his impressive run in the month of August as he takes the ball for Brockton with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
