August 21, 2011 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Tony Patane hit his first professional homer and Nick Serinoa stranded six Rox baserunners (including three of his own) in a 6-4 victory over Brockton on Sunday. The Tornadoes swept a road series for the first time this season and ended the season series with Brockton 6-8 despite losing the first seven contests.
Worcester had a homerun in each of the first three innings to lead 5-0 after two and a half. Nick Salotti hit his league-leading 21st to make it 3-0 in the first frame (after a Chris Colabello RBI double). Patane went yard for the first time as a pro in the second, and Colabello's solo shot gave the Tornadoes their fifth run.
Brockton struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, as Dominic Ramos and Jeremy Hunt started it with extra base hits. Ramos finished the game 3-for-4 with a triple and three runs scored. Each inning that he led off, he recorded a hit and later scored.
The Tornadoes got back on the board in the fifth inning, when Alex Trezza notched his third RBI hit in the last four games to plate Cameron Monger. In the bottom half, the Rox responded with Mike Torres's second RBI on an out, a groundout (after previously hitting a sacrifice fly).
Brockton added its last run in the seventh. Chris Valencia got his third hit in 14 tries this weekend, a double which scored Ramos for the third and final time.
Nick Serino entered the game one batter later and struck two of the three batters he faced out to end the threat. He retired each of the final batters he faced in the seventh, eighth and ninth (for the first out).
Albert Ayala earned his third save of the year by retiring both batters he faced in the ninth inning, getting Melvin Falu to fly out to end it.
Ryan Bicondoa went 6.1 innings in his fifth win of the season (5-1), allowing 11 hits and four runs (all earned) while striking out three batters and walking none.
Freddy Flores didn't make it out of the fifth inning for Brockton, serving up three homers, two doubles and two singles. He struck three batters out, walked two, and allowed the only six runs Worcester scored in the game.
After an off-day on Monday, the Tornadoes will head to Pittsfield for a three-game midweek match-up. The Colonials are 1.5 games ahead of Worcester for fourth in the CanAm League Overall Standings. If the Tornadoes don't win the second half (which they're currently ahead by 1.5 games in), getting into the top four is their only shot at a playoff berth.
