Worcester Tornadoes News Release
WORCESTER- The Tornadoes bats were stifled for a second straight game as they fell in the opener of a three game set to the North Shore Spirit, 4-1.
The Spirit were led by an outstanding pitching performance from lefty Bryan
Morse (1-1). Morse threw eight innings giving up three hits and allowing only one earned run while striking out eight. He was in complete control throughout the game, the sole run he surrendered came in the fifth inning when Jeff Lahair hit a one-out double down the right field line which reached the wall. Lahair came around to score on a two-out RBI single to center field by Tornadoes center fielder Lucas Taylor.
DJ Mattox started for the Tornadoes and took the loss, although he showed signs of brilliance. Mattox threw five innings allowing two earned runs while walking three and striking out seven. Right fielder Andrew Wishy paced the Spirit's offense belting three doubles, scoring two runs and bringing in one run with an RBI. After Mattox worked a nifty first inning, striking out two batters, he quickly found himself in trouble in the second. The first four runners reached base on two singles, a double and one free pass. The second run came across when catcher Alex Treeza hit an RBI single to center plating Wishy.
It was a 2-1 lead in the eighth when the Spirit picked up an insurance run. The rally started with a double by Wishy, who scored immediately on an RBI single by first baseman Jeff Brooks.
The most intriguing half inning of the night came in the top of the ninth. Spirit left fielder Garrett Weir lead off the inning by laying down a bunt and reaching on a throwing error by Tornadoes catcher Patrick Perry. Tornadoes Coach Gedman argued the play adamantly but to no avail. Weir moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt by second baseman BJ Weir. Shortstop Chris Rowan brought in Weir with and RBI single.
On the ensuing play Wishy hit his third double of the game. Rowan tried to score all the way from first on the play, and when the ball beat him by several steps, he barreled into Perry. Perry was not pleased with the manner that Rowan trucked him and rolled the ball in the direction of Rowan. Rowan quickly picked up the ball and fired it towards the ground near Perry. When this occurred both benches cleared but no fight materialized. Rowan was ejected from the game for his actions.
Matt Weagle came on in relief of Mattox, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run. Matt Meagher threw the final 1.2 innings for the Tornadoes surrendering only one unearned run. For the Spirit, Kevin Fitzgerald was called upon to close out the game. He picked up the save by forcing Tornadoes right fielder Keith Beauregard to hit into a game ending double play.
The game was played on a drizzly night in front of 2,707 fans. The Tornadoes will look to even the Commonwealth Cup Series Saturday night at 7:05 at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.
