Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Little Falls, NJ -- Righty Junior Guerrero made a solid return from the disabled list, the Worcester offense supplied him with some early runs, and the bullpen made it stand up, as the Tornadoes notched their first win against the Jackals this season, winning 4-2 on Wednesday night.
The Worcester offense made things easier for Guerrero (3-3) by jumping on Jackals righthander Aaron Tressler right off the bat. B.J. Weed started the game by reaching on a fielding error by third baseman Vic Davilla and Scott Grimes followed with a double into the leftfield corner, moving Weed to third base. Chris Colabello walked, loading the bases, and Alex Trezza plated Weed with a fielder's choice grounder to first base. Francisco Caraballo and Chuck Jeroloman followed with back-to-back RBI singles, scoring Grimes and Trezza, and putting the Tornadoes up 3-0.
Meanwhile, Guerrero did a terrific job working out of jams, leaving the bases loaded in the 1st and stranding two more men on base in the 3rd. Jeroloman gave Guerrero an extra run to work with in the 4th, lining a solo home run, his third of the season, over the leftfield wall to make it 4-0 Worcester. But the Jackals finally cracked the scoreboard in the 5th, scoring twice off Guerrero on three singles a walk and a balk. However, Matt Weagle came out of the bullpen for the first time this year to toss two scoreless innings and lefty Ryan Lobban finished up with two perfect frames to seal the deal for Worcester.
Guerrero (3-3) allowed just the two runs in five innings for the Win and Tressler (1-4) took the Loss despite striking out 11 in his seven innings of work. Lobban picked up his third Save of the season in as many chances. Tornadoes Manager Rich Gedman was ejected in the bottom of the 5th inning by first base umpire Jon Lindstrom for arguing the balk call on Guerrero. It was Gedman's first ejection in over two years, dating back to early June 2006 in Brockton. B.J. Weed's franchise-record 18-game hitting streak came to an end, as Weed went 0-3 with a walk. The Tornadoes remain 1.5 games back of first place Quebec with 9 games remaining in the first half. Worcester will be back in action for a single home game tomorrow night against the Nashua Pride, as they will send lefty Tom Cochran to the mound opposite Nashua righty Jason Paul. First pitch is set for 7:05pm. It will be Armed Forces Night at the ballpark and in honor of the July 4th holiday, the Tornadoes will feature their fourth postgame fireworks show of the season, courtesy of Becker College and Price Chopper. Tickets for the game are available in person by stopping by the Tornadoes box office at the ballpark or at the team office located at 303 Main St. in Worcester, by phone at 508-792-2288 or online by visiting www.worcestertornadoes.com.
