New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ - After allowing three runs in the top of the first inning, New Jersey Jackals starting pitcher Aaron Tressler settled down to strike out a season-high eleven batters, but the Worcester Tornaodes hung on for a 4-2 win on Wednesday night in front of 3,907 fans at Yogi Berra Stadium. The Jackals loss, which was their first in seven games this year against the Tornadoes, drops the team three games behind the first-place Capitales de Quebec with eight games remaining in the first half of the Can-Am League season.
In the Tornadoes three-run first, leadoff hitter BJ Weed reached on an error by Jackals 3B Vic Davilla. After a double by RF Scott Grimes put runners on second and third, an RBI fielders choice off the bat of C Alex Trezza put Worcester up 1-0. Back to back singles by the next two batters, LF Francisco Caraballo and SS Chuck Jeroloman, gave the Tornadoes a 3-0 advantage. Worcester added a run in the top of the fourth inning on Jeroloman's third home run of the season, which extended the lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, New Jersey countered with two runs against Worcester starter Junior Guerrero. CF Zack Smithlin led off with a single which DH Luke Allen followed with a walk. Smithlin later scored on a balk; a call that Worcester manager Rich Gedman argued and was thrown out on. Later in the inning, Davilla laced an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Guerrero (3-3) picked up the win in his first start since coming off the disabled list with a strained right bicep. The right-hander went five innings and allowed two runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Tressler (1-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs - three earned - on just four hits over seven innings. New Jersey native Ryan Lobban pitched two perfect innings to earn his third save of the season for the Tornadoes.
The Jackals travel to Atlantic City on Thursday night to begin a four-game series against the Surf before returning home to Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday, July 9th for an 11:05 a.m. contest against the Brockton Rox. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning five minutes prior to first pitch.
