Tornadoes Best Cutters for Third Straight Night

June 15, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

On Tuesday night it was the Worcester Tornadoes bats that did the damage against the New Haven County Cutters. On Wednesday, it was the pitching that was too much for the Cutters to handle as they fell to the Tornadoes, 5-0.

Starter Alex Pena and reliever Chris Shank combined to throw a five-hitter against the Cutters, who were shutout for the second time this season.

Worcester tagged Cutters starter Rolando Valles for five runs in five and two-thirds innings. Jarrett Starwarz pitched effectively in relief allowing only one hit over the course of his three and one-third innings of work.

No Cutters batter had more than one hit on the night. Worcester first baseman Yohanny Valera had three hits and center fielder Lucas Taylor had two RBIs.

Valles pitched better than indicated in the box score. He was victimized by a Darren Ciraco miscue in the outfield to start the sixth inning. Ciraco appeared to lose an Andy Brown fly ball in the Yale Field lights only to have it land next to him before bouncing into the picnic area for a ground rule double. Danilo Reynoso doubled past third baseman Jeff Brooks to score Brown for the third run of the game. A pair of singles followed and suddenly the Cutters were trailing 5-0, more than enough for Pena and Shank.

Thursday night is the final game of this four-game series. The Cutters will look to Courtney Hall for their first victory of the homestand. Worcester counters with Reid Willett.
