Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Worcester, MA - The Worcester Tornadoes are excited to announce that their "Smiley Face" t-shirt giveaway will take place on Wednesday night, June 25.

The first 1,500 fans through the gates for that night's 6:05pm game against the New Jersey Jackals will receive a Tornadoes Smiley Face t-shirt courtesy of Hanover Insurance. The Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation will have a booth on the concourse to promote this year's World Smile Day ® effort called "Send a Smile to a Soldier," which allows people to purchase smiley face cookies online that will be sent to American troops overseas. Worcester's Harvey Ball originally made the "Smiley Face" famous back in 1963. His son Charlie, Managing Trustee of the Foundation, will be in attendance at the game. Members of Congressman Jim McGovern's staff will be at the ballpark to assist with the Send a Smile Campaign, as will Hank Stolz from WCRN Radio and Bill Wallace, Director of Worcester Historical Museum.

"We are thrilled to be able to offer ‘Smiley Face" t-shirts to our fans and celebrate the incredible influence of this icon," said Tornadoes Vice President and Director of Sales, Dave Peterson. "The ‘Smiley Face' is ingrained in American and worldwide culture and we are very proud that its origin was right here in Worcester."

The "Smiley Face" has deep roots in Worcester. In 1963, Harvey Ball was contracted by Worcester-based Hanover Insurance (which was then known as The State Mutual Life Assurance Company) to design a smiley face to be used in the company's new promotional campaign. The State Mutual Life Assurance Company had recently merged with Guarantee Mutual Company of Ohio, and they were looking for a way to boost employee morale. Ball developed what is now the trademark "Smiley Face" in less than ten minutes, and it was an instant success. Forty-five years later, it is still an internationally recognized symbol.

Tickets to the game are available in person by stopping by the Tornadoes office at 303 Main St. in Worcester or at the Tornadoes box office at the ballpark on game days, by calling 508-792-2288, or online at www.worcestertorandoes.com.
