Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (June 19, 2008) - Propelled by four home runs the Rox avoided a sweep at the hands of the Worcester Tornadoes on Thursday night as the offense put up 12 runs en route to a 12-8 win.
Brockton Rox rookie DH Josh Vander Hey was starting in just his second professional game, and seeking his first hit as a pro in the third inning when he took a 2-1 pitch from Worcester starter RHP Junior Guerrero and hit it over the left field wall to tie the game at 1. Brockton proceeded to put eight runs on the board in the frame, capped by Vander Hey's second home run of the inning, a three-run blast to dead centerfield.
Rox starter RHP Wayne Lundgren cruised through the first five innings, allowing just a second-inning run and then sending down ten Tornados' batters in-a-row. But Worcester battled back with five runs in the sixth inning, led by a three-run double from 1B Chris Colabello.
Brockton held on by adding insurance runs late in the game. CF Ervin Alcantara and 2B Melvin Falu each hit solo home runs, and Brockton scored twice in the eighth inning to hang on in an offensive slugfest 12-8.
Lundgren picked up his second win of the season, and RHP Jerry Dunn recorded his sixth save of the season, by retiring just one man in the ninth inning.
The Rox turn its attention to the New Jersey Jackals on Friday night at Campanelli Stadium. Brockton will send RHP Steve Delabar to make his first start in a Brockton uniform. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
