Jackals can't pull out 'W' in series finale

Little Falls, NJ - In a game that included 20 combined runs, 31 hits and 26 runners left on base, the Atlantic City Surf outlasted the New Jersey Jackals 12-8 in a three hour and 47 minute marathon on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Atlantic City jumped out to a first inning lead for the third consecutive night. Shortstop Anthony Granato tripled to begin the game. Granato scored when the next batter, left fielder Joe Burke, singled him home to make it 1-0. The Surf took a 2-0 lead when Burke scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher William Plaza. In the top of the third inning, a leadoff home run by Surf right fielder Josh Burrus made it 3-0 Atlantic City. Burrus paced the Surf offense, falling a triple shy of hitting for the cycle as he went 3-6 with two runs and two RBIs. The Jackals got on the board in the bottom of the third when designatd hitter Juan Tejeda singled home center fielder Zack Smithlin to cut the Surf lead to 3-1.

The Surf broke the game open with five runs in the top of the fourth. Following a walk and a New Jersey error, center fielder Lucas Taylor stroked an RBI single to put Atlantic City on top 4-1. Granato followed with a two-run double before first baseman Eddie Kim plated two more runs with a base hit later in the frame to extend the Surf lead to 8-1.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Jackals struck again. Left fielder Ramon Nivar led off with a single, stole second base, and advanced to third on a base hit by catcher Craig Maddox. Shortstop Casey Gordon then flew out to left field but Nivar faked to the plate, drawing the throw from Burke which sailed over home plate, allowing the Jackals to cut the Surf lead to 8-2. Atlantic City plated three more runs in the top of the fifth to blow the game open at 11-2 when a walk and an error were followed by back-to-back RBI singles by Taylor and Granato and a run-scoring groundout by Burrus.

In the bottom of the sixth, three hits combined with two Atlantic City errors enabled the Jackals to score five runs and climb back into the contest. Two-run singles by third baseman Chris Kelly and Nivar keyed the rally as New Jersey cut the lead to 11-7 The Jackals added a run in the eighth, but the Surf countered with a run in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring at 12-8 New Jersey starter Michael Vicaro took the loss, lasting just 3 1/3 innings while allowing eight runs - six earned - on ten hits. Atlantic City's J.C. Huguet starter and earned the victory despite being roughed up in the Jackals' five-run fifth. Huguet scattered 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Only two of his seven runs were earned as the Surf committed three errors in the contest. New Jersey tied a season high with four errors.
