Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Little Falls, NJ -- Righty Shaun McNamara pitched his heart out, going the distance for Worcester in a losing effort, as the New Jersey Jackals edged the Tornadoes, 4-3, at Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday night.
The Jackals struck first in the bottom of the 2nd inning, using a Chris Colabello error to set up a two-out RBI single by Andrew Larsen that put New Jersey up 1-0. The unearned run was the 11th charged to McNamara (2-6) in 10 starts this year. The Tornadoes fought back against Jackals lefty Isaac Pavlik (5-2) in the 4th, plating a pair of runs on a Colabello RBI double and an Alex Trezza sacrifice fly, to take their first and only lead of the game at 2-1. But the lead was short-lived. Luke Allen and Chris Kelly rapped out back-to-back singles off McNamara in the bottom half of the 4th, and both runners scored on a two-run triple to right-center off the bat of Tornadoes-killer Juan Tejeda. The RBIs gave Tejeda 15 runs knocked home against Worcester in 8 games on the season. One out later, Marcos Rodriguez drove home Tejeda with a sacrifice fly to center for a 4-2 Jackals lead. The Tornadoes closed within one run on a Francisco Caraballo RBI single off Pavlik in the 6th, but Worcester could draw no closer.
Pavlik (5-2) scattered 11 hits over 7 innings for the Win and McNamara pitched all 8 innings, allowing just 8 hits and 4 runs (3 earned), but was saddled with the Loss. Rusty Tucker worked around a Josh Farkes single to strike out the side in the 9th for his league-leading 12th Save of the season. Every member of the Tornadoes starting lineup had at least one hit except for Chuck Jeroloman. Farkes went 4-for-4 with 4 singles. Caraballo extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games, the eighth Tornadoes hitting streak of 10 or more games this season. The Tornadoes will try to get back on track and even their four-game series with the Jackals at one win apiece on Friday night, when they send righty Alex Pena to the mound opposite Jackals righthander Aaron Tressler. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
The Tornadoes return home on Monday, July 21 for a three-game series against the Sussex Skyhawks. Monday will be Guaranteed Win Night and Salsa Night. Tuesday is New England Sports Night, while Wednesday is Park & Rec Day!
