Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
Stellar pitching and clutch hitting propelled the Albuquerque Isotopes (37-40) the 4-2 triumph over the Iowa Cubs (45-34) Tuesday night at Isotopes Park. Dallas McPherson slugged another home run in a fifth consecutive game one shy of a team record that was set in 2005, while starter Chris Seddon earned his sixth victory of the season by shutting down Iowa's offense, scattering five hits while allowing two runs in seven innings.
The Iowa Cubs jumped to an instant lead as leadoff hitter Andres Torres continued his red-hot hitting against the âTopes by slamming a solo blast over the left field fence, giving the Cubs the 1-0 lead.
Albuquerque responded in the second when McPherson singled to lead off the inning only to steal second for John Baker, who singled past the second baseman to allow McPherson to score and tie the game up at one.
The Cubs reclaimed the lead when Torres slammed his second homer of the game, another solo shot to left-center that gave Iowa the 2-1 advantage.
The Isotopes responded in the fourth with McPherson's 26th homer of the season over the left-center field fence to tie the game at two.
Albuquerque surged ahead when Jai Miller led off the sixth inning with a double to left in front of Chris Barnwell, who reached after being hit by a pitch thrown by Iowa starter Jeff Samardzija. With two men on, McPherson hit a deep fly out to the left-center field gap that allowed Miller to tag up and slide into third. With runners on first and third, Jason Wood smacked a line-drive double to left-center, scoring Miller easily and giving the Isotopes the 3-2 lead. Barnwell attempted to score on the play as well, but was tossed out the plate despite trying to knock out the ball by colliding with Iowa catcher Tony Richie.
In the seventh, pinch-hitter Tagg Bozied slapped a single past Iowa's shortstop to lead off the inning and quickly stole second before scampering into third following a Lorenzo Scott single. Miller then knocked a sacrifice fly to right field that was deep enough to plate Bozied and increase the Isotopes lead to two, 4-2.
Relievers Randy Williams (H,9) and Marc Gwyn (S, 4) came in and continued the excellent pitching performance set by Seddon, controlling the final two innings by shutting down the Cubs' bats and securing the 4-2 Isotopes victory.
Following an off day the Isotopes will embark on a ten-game eight-day road trip through America's heartland visiting Iowa and Round Rock. To kick off the road trip Albuquerque right hander Dallas Trahern (2-6, 6.92) will square off against Iowa right Mike Burns (5-4, 3.17) Thursday night at Principal Park, first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM.
After the first eight-day road trip in over a month the Isotopes will return to Isotopes Park on July 4th when they take on the New Orleans Zephyrs at 7:05 PM. Tickets can be purchased at Isotopes Park or any Ticketmaster outlet, www.ticketmaster.com, or Ticketmaster by phone 505-883-7800.
