West Sacramento, Calif. - Sacramento River Cats starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez was named the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 16 - June 22, league officials announced Monday. This is the first time a River Cats player has won the weekly award this season.

The 22-year-old left-hander needed just one start to earn the honor, not allowing a run and surrendering just one hit in eight innings while striking out 12 batters against the Fresno Grizzlies on June 18th at Raley Field. Gonzalez is currently third in the PCL in strikeouts with 83 on the season. Gonzalez has a 2.90 ERA in seven home appearances with Sacramento this season.

Gonzalez, a native of Hialeah, Florida, is in his fifth professional season and his first with the River Cats. Gonzalez was acquired as part of the trade that sent Nick Swisher to the Chicago White Sox before the 2008 season. Last season in Double-A Birmingham, Gonzalez led all of minor league baseball with a strikeout total of 185.
