Top Prospect RHP Alex Reyes and St. Louis RHP Jordan Walden Joining Springfield Today

Springfield, MO - The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that top prospect, RHP Alex Reyes, has been transferred to the Springfield Cardinals from the Palm Beach Cardinals (High-A). Reyes is scheduled to make his Double-A debut at Hammons Field against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals this Saturday, July 25 at 6:10pm.

The Cardinals have also announced that RHP Jordan Walden is joining Springfield on a Major League Rehab Assignment. Walden is expected to pitch for Springfield throughout the series against the Naturals at Hammons Field.

Reyes, 20, has dominated the Florida State League this season, going 2-5 with a 2.26 ERA through 13 starts with Palm Beach. He has racked up an incredible 96 strikeouts, while allowing only 49 hits and 36 walks through 63.2 innings. In one of his finest performances of the season, Reyes struck out a remarkable 13 batters in six innings against the Dunedin Blue Jays on June 17. He has posted a fantastic 13.57 strikeouts / 9 innings rate this year.

The Elizabeth, New Jersey native was ranked by Baseball America as the Cardinals top prospect in the publication's midseason rankings in early July. Reyes was also ranked as the #10 overall prospect and #4 pitching prospect in all of Minor League Baseball. In his third professional campaign, Reyes was signed by St. Louis as a non-drafted free agent in 2012 out of Elizabeth (NJ) High School.

Walden, 27, has gone 0-1 with a miniscule 0.87 ERA through 12 outings in his first season with St. Louis. The veteran right-hander was acquired by the Cardinals from the Atlanta Braves along with RF Jason Heyward in exchange for RHP Shelby Miller and RHP Tyrell Jenkins on November 17, 2014.

After debuting with the Los Angeles Angels in 2010, Walden took the Major Leagues by storm in 2011, going 5-5 with a 2.98 ERA through 62 outings that year. He set the Angels rookie record with 32 saves in 2011 and became the first Angels rookie to be selected to the American League All-Star Team since Jason Dickson in 1997. The Fort Worth, Texas native was acquired by the Atlanta Braves from the Angels on November 30, 2012, and pitched in 108 games with the Braves throughout the next two seasons before joining the Cardinals. In his big league career, Walden has gone 12-14 with a 3.00 ERA and 39 saves in 243 games, striking out 266 batters in 222.0 total innings of work.
