Rochester, NY (August 1, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Rochester Red Wings, 10-4, Saturday night at Frontier Field. The Chiefs' top two hitters, Emmanuel Burriss and Trea Turner combined to go 8 for 10, reaching a combined ten times with four hits and a walk each.
Syracuse (43-66) started the scoring in the second inning. Caleb Ramsey walked with two outs, and scored a batter later on Steve Lerud's double off the right-field wall to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Rochester (55-52) answered in the bottom of the frame. Xavier Avery singled off Chiefs starter Richard Bleier. Avery moved to second on Eric Farris' walk before advancing to third and eventually scored on back-to-back groundouts to tie the score.
The Chiefs put together a strong offensive output in the third. Turner picked up his second hit of the game to start the inning. After a groundout, Kevin Keyes singled to put runners on the corners. Matt den Dekker then doubled home Turner to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead. Darin Mastroianni followed with a ground ball to shortstop. Matt den Dekker was retired in run down between second and third, allowing Keyes to score to give Syracuse a 3-1 edge. Ricky Hague then singled home Mastroianni to push the lead to 4-1. After an error on center fielder Danny Ortiz, Hague attempted to round the bases and score, but Argenis Diaz' throw from shortstop erased him at the plate.
The Red Wings again would answer Chiefs runs with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. James Beresford singled and Reynaldo Rodriguez doubled to put runners on second and third. Beresford scored on a fielder's choice by Jose Martinez, and Rodriguez scored on Avery's single to cut the score to 4-3.
The Chiefs continued the slugfest in the fourth. Burriss singled with two outs. Turner then launched his third home run of the season, estimated at 403 feet over the left-center-field wall, to stretch the lead to 6-3.
The scoring slowed down for a bit, but the Chiefs got on the board again in the sixth. Hague tripled to start the inning and scored a batter later on Ramsey's single, giving the Chiefs a 7-3 lead.
For the third time in the game, Rochester answered Syracuse runs in the top of an inning with runs in the bottom of the inning. Avery singled with one out and scored two batters later on Chris Herrmann's double to get back within three at 7-4.
The Chiefs finished off the scoring in the eighth. Alex Meyer allowed a single to Lerud to start the inning, then walked Burriss and Turner to load the bases. After Cole Johnson entered the game, Skole doubled off the right-field wall to bring in two more runs and make the score 9-4. Two batters later, Mastroianni beat out an infield single to score Turner and cap the scoring at 10-4.
The Chiefs and Red Wings play the rubber game of the three-game series Sunday at 1:35 p.m. Taylor Hill is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Pat Dean for Rochester.
