Tomlin shines in win over G-Braves

The Lead: The Columbus Clippers defeated the Gwinnett Braves 8-1 on Friday night at Coolray Field. Columbus pitcher Josh Tomlin allowed only 1 hit in his 7 innings of work. The Clippers clinched the series win with tonight's victory (3-1). Gwinnett (18-23) now sits in a second place tie with Norfolk in the International League South and 4.5 games behind Durham. Columbus (27-16) remains in first place and 2.5 games ahead of Toledo.

It Was Over When: Tomlin took the mound. He faced only two batters more than the minimum and walked 2. This is his third win in a row.

Braves Beat: On the Mound: Starter James Parr (2-5) allowed 5 R/ER on 9 hits in 4 innings. Jeff Lyman pitched 3 innings and struck out 1.

At the plate: Shortstop Brandon Hicks hit his first home run as a Gwinnett Brave. It was his first home run since 9/7/09. Right fielder Gregor Blanco went 2-for-3. Second baseman Matt Young stays hot at the plate going 1-for-3 with a double.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: Tomlin (5-1) struck out 5 batters and held the G-Braves scoreless in 7.0 innings of work.

At the plate: Catcher Carlos Santana was the only player from Columbus without a hit. Second baseman Brian Bixler went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI.

On Deck: Gwinnett faces off against Indianapolis in game one of a four-game series tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at Victory Field. G-Braves RHP Todd Redmond (3-4, 5.66 ERA) is scheduled to face RHP Brad Lincoln (4-2, 3.83 ERA) of the Indians.
