Syracuse Mets News Release
Rochester, N.Y. - On Friday night the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Rochester Red Wings 6-1 to sweep a four game series at Frontier Field. Syracuse has now won five games in a row, which is the longest winning streak of the season for the Chiefs.
Syracuse (25-15) improved to ten games over the .500 mark for the first time this season scoring four runs in the first three innings. Red Wings starter Glen Perkins (0-6) allowed a first pitch ground rule double by Justin Maxwell and he scored on a single by Kevin Mench. Chase Lambin knocked Mench in to double the Syracuse lead.
In the bottom half of the first, Rochester (15-27) scored its only run of the evening. Matt Tolbert walked with one out and scored on a double by Jose Morales. Chiefs starter Shairon Martis (2-2) quieted the Red Wings lineup after that however. Martis worked seven innings and allowed just four base hits and struck out six. Friday was the second straight day and second time in 2010 that a Chiefs starter pitched seven complete innings.
In the ninth inning, the Chiefs added to their lead with two more runs. Pete Orr singled with tow outs and scored on a double by Eric Bruntlett to left field. That put Syracuse ahead 5-1. The next batter, Carlos Maldonado, followed with a run scoring single and pushed the Chiefs ahead for good 6-1.
Ron Villone pitched a scoreless ninth for Syracuse following Victor Garate who walked two batters in the eighth, but worked his way out of trouble and did not allow a run.
Syracuse returns home on Saturday night to begin a four game series with the Toledo Mud Hens. The Chiefs will send J.D. Martin (1-1, 3.81) to the mound against Enrique Gonzalez (2-4, 3.69) for the Mud Hens. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Alliance Bank Stadium.
