Tomahawks Erase Two Goal Deficit, Defeat Soo 3-2 in Shootout

The Johnstown Tomahawks went into tonight's game looking to pick up their first division win of the season. Thanks to goals by Omar Mullan and Shane Bednard, they were able to erase a two goal deficit and defeat the Soo Eagles 3-2 in a shootout. Zach Wallace scored the lone goal of the shootout in the seventh round.

The Eagles struck first as Bradley Mueller scored just 1:53 into the first period. They made it 2-0 on a Mike Sabatini goal at 8:36 of the period. The score would remain the same until Mullan scored the first Tomahawks goal at 11:26 of the second period. Wallace added an assist on Mullan's goal. Shane Bednard tied the game with 4:50 remaining in the third period, to send the game into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime period, the two teams went scoreless in the shootout, before Wallace scored the game winner in the seventh round.

Alex Okicki earned his first win of the season, stopping 26 of 28 shots in regulation and overtime, and all seven shots he face in the shootout. Former Tomahawks goaltender Colin Brennan took the loss, stopping 37 of 39 shots and all but one shot in the shootout.

The Tomahawks outshot the Eagles 40-28 overall and 32-18 in the last two periods and overtime. Both teams scored one power-play goal and combined for 51 penalty minutes.

The Tomahawks and Eagles conclude their weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. They return to the War Memorial Oct. 5-6 to take on the Springfield Jr. Blues.
