Austin Bruins News Release
After five straight wins to start the season, the Austin Bruins (5-1-0) suffered their first blemish of the 2013-14 campaign Saturday night in a 4-2 loss to the Minot Minotauros (2-3-1) at Maysa Arena in Minot.
The Bruins jumped out to an early lead, when center Luke Dietsch (St. Paul, MN) beat rookie goaltender Merrick Madsen (Acton, CA) for his first goal of the season. The Minotauros responded with a blueline drive from the stick of Jon Lizotte (Grand Forks, ND) that snuck past Austin starting goalie Justin Quale (Minnetonka, MN). After a Bruins penalty, Jadin Martin (Minot, ND) took a slap shot that found the net, giving the Tauros a 2-1 lead at the first break.
Bruins rookie forward Sam Kauppila evened the score 6:08 into the second period, when he beat Madsen on a breakaway for his first career goal. Late in the frame, Minotauros veteran defenseman Scott Dornbrock (Harper Woods, MI) capitalized on an Austin turnover when he worked his way around the last Bruin back and scored through the five-hole to put Minot in front for good.
A late empty-netter spoiled the Bruins comeback effort, as the Tauros earned the series split. After starting the second period between the pipes, Nick Lehr (Roseville, MN) finished the game and took his first loss on the season. Madsen made 18 saves in the win.
The Bruins next travel to Brookings Friday, before welcoming the Blizzard Saturday, October 5 in the team s home opener at Riverside Arena in Austin.
