Toledo Rolls to a 4-0 Victory Over the Indians
August 21, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio -- Right-hander Virgil Vasquez tossed a two-hit, complete-game shutout, while first baseman Chris Shelton crushed a fourth-inning grand slam as Toledo rolled to a 4-0 blanking of Indianapolis in front of 7,827 Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field.
The Mud Hens improve to 74-55 overall and 41-24 at home, while the Indians fall to 66-63 on the season and 31-36 on the road. Wednesday will be the Tribe's 275th consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
Indianapolis continues to trail Durham in the International League's Wild Card race, while Toledo opens up an eight-game advantage over the Indians in the IL's West Division.
Vasquez (9.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 SO), who improved to 11-5 with the win, needed just 123 pitches to get through all nine frames. He faced just three over the minimum and didn't allow a free pass until the final inning.
Vasquez, who posted an 0-1 record and 7.11 ERA in two starts vs. Indianapolis earlier this season, picks up the third nine-inning shutout of his five-year professional career and his second in 2007.
The Mud Hens scored all four of their runs in the fourth. LF Jason Perry reached on a fielder's choice before RF Brent Clevlen and 3B Mike Hessman drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Shelton then smoked his 13th long ball of the campaign -- a grand slam to over the 365-foot marker in left center.
DH Timo Perez (2-for-3) registered Toledo's only multi-hit game -- a single to center in the first and a double to right in the fourth.
CF Andrew McCutchen (2-for-4) collected both of the Tribe's hits -- a base knock to center in the fourth and infield single in the sixth.
Indians RHP Bryan Bullington (5.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO) suffered the loss, falling to 11-7. Outside of the troublesome fourth, he allowed just two hits and two walks over four scoreless innings.
The two teams return to Fifth Third Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m., for game three of the four-game set. RHP John Van Benschoten is scheduled to start for Indianapolis, while RHP Jordan Tata is expected to get the nod for Toledo.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
