Toledo Drops Cyclones, 3-2, In Preseason Game

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Toledo Walleye scored a pair of goals in the first ten minutes and held on for a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones in a preseason game at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night. Brett Robinson led the offensive charge for the Cyclones with a goal and an assist.
Toledo grabbed a 2-1 first period edge. Rookie Brandon Naurato slapped home a power play marker at 7:43 to give the Walleye the 1-0 advantage. Adam Hobson and Dan Bertram tallied the assists. The lead extended to 2-0 when rookie Daniel Michalsky snapped a shot from down low from Dan Patrosso and Eric Giosa. The Cyclones got their first stanza score from rookie Matt Pierce, who fired the puck over the glove hand of Toledo netminder Alec Richards. Brett Robinson and Robert Mayer had the assists. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 10-9, in the period.
The Walleye added to their lead to 3-1 after two periods. Patrossa scored a shorthanded breakaway goal at 15:18. Jean-Claude Sawyer intercepted a Cyclone pass and threw the puck into open space in the neutral zone for Patrossa to recover. The physical portion of the game picked up in the middle frame when Cyclone forward Kyle Hagel squared off with Walleye defenseman Ryan Stokes. The shots on goal again favored Cincinnati, 13-7.
The Cyclones scored the lone goal of the third period at 2:50 of the frame as Robinson grabbed a rebound in the slot off of a Dwayne Zinger shot. Dustin Sproat grabbed the other assist. Cincinnati kept pressure on the Walleye throughout the frame but was unable to net the equalizing goal. The shots favored the Cyclones again in the period, 9-2 and led the category for the game at 32-18.
Alec Richards collected the win for Toledo, stopping 30 shots. Robert Mayer absorbed the loss for the Cyclones, turning aside 15 shots. Toledo was one for five on the power play, while Cincinnati was one for seven on the power play.
The teams meet again tomorrow night at the Tam-O-Shanter Arena in Sylvania. Faceoff is at 7:30pm. The regular season starts next Friday (Oct. 16) with a 7pm clash at Elmira. The Cyclones open the season at Elmira on Friday, October 16 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Wheeling on Saturday, October 24 at 7:30pm. There will be a special divisional championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.
