Wranglers Power Past Reign 5-2

Las Vegas, NV - The Las Vegas Wranglers(r) (1-0-0) defeated the Ontario Reign (0-1-0) 5-2 in the Wranglers preseason opener in front of 1,850 at the Orleans Arena. The Las Vegas power-play led the way with three goals coming from forwards Brett Wilson, Greg Collins, and Mick Lawrence. Forward Dan Riedel and defenseman Robbie Bina also scored for the Wranglers. Las Vegas goalie Michael Ouzas stopped 19 of 21 shots for the preseason win. Wranglers forwards Matt Kang and Adam Miller each tallied two assists. Ontario forwards Jon Francisco and Greg Hogeboom tallied for the Reign. Ontario goalie Curtis Darling made 35 saves in the loss. The Wranglers and Reign will meet up again tomorrow night in Ontario at the Center Ice Arena at 7:00 p.m.

Ontario got on the board early with a goal from forward Jon Francisco just 1:12 into the first period. Reign forward Dwight King and defenseman Mike Egener set up Francisco's first goal of the preseason for the 1-0 lead. The Wranglers would answer at 6:35 of the opening period, as Wranglers forward Brett Wilson slammed in a power-play goal.

Wilson scooped up an Adam Miller rebound and stuffed it in the net to tie the game at 1-1. The Wranglers would take the lead with 9:00 remaining in the first period as Dan Riedel tallied his first goal of the preseason. Riedel snapped in a big rebound from a Chris Neiszner shot to take a 2-1 lead. Las Vegas struck again on the power play, as Wranglers forward Greg Collins tipped in a John Schwarz point shot for the 3-1 lead. Wranglers forward Adam Miller picked up his second assist on the power-play goal at 13:47 of the first period.

In the second period, the Wranglers stretched the lead with their third power-play goal coming from forward Mick Lawrence at 13:10. Wranglers forwards Matt Kang and Ned Lukacevic set up Lawrence's first goal of the preseason to extend the lead to 4-1. Las Vegas tallied late in the period as defenseman Robbie Bina darted in low and snapped in the puck at 17:50. Bina skated in to the slot and ripped a one-timer past Ontario goalie Curtis Darling for the 5-1 Wranglers lead.

In the final period, the Ontario Reign tried to claw back into the game with a power-play goal from Greg Hogeboom. Jon Francisco and Mike Egener set up Hogeboom at 12:57 to trim the score to the eventual 5-2 final.

Following the game, Wranglers General Manager / Head Coach commented on his team and tonight's strong play. "These players really like playing with together," Mougenel said, "And tonight was just the beginning of the journey."

The Las Vegas Wranglers(r) are the ECHL affiliate to the National Hockey League's Phoenix Coyotes, and the American Hockey League's San Antonio Rampage.

The Wranglers open the 2009-10 season at home on Friday, October 16, 2009 at 7:05 PM against Utah. 2009-10 season seat packages are on sale now at (702) 471-PUCK. The Wranglers play all 36 regular season home games at the Orleans Arena, located adjacent to the Orleans Hotel and Casino at 4500 W. Tropicana Avenue.
