Toledo Beats Trenton 1-0 on Sunday

(Toledo, OH) - For the second straight night, the Walleye and Trenton Devils faced off at the Huntington Center. On Sunday, the Walleye dominated much of the play and earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory. The Walleye are now 30-30-4-2 overall this season with a 15-16-2-1 record at home.
Toledo had the first power play opportunity of the contest at 3:12 in the 1st period and Randy Rowe cashed in with his 18th goal of the year just six seconds into the man advantage with Kyle Rogers and Jason Lepine notching assists. This goal turned out to be the game-winner as Thomas McCollum stopped all 17 shots for the shutout.
Trenton had two power play chances of their own in the first period but were unable to convert. Toledo out-shot the Devils 11-8 in the first period.
Mike Hedden nearly gave the Walleye a 2-0 lead mid-way through the 2nd period on a breakaway chance but his backhand shot hit the post.
The Walleye power play would get their 2nd chance of the period and third chance of the game at 14:28 of the 2nd period. Unfortunately, the fish were again unable to convert.
Toledo dominated the play in the 2nd period as they out-shot the Devils 15-4 and held a 26-12 advantage on shots through two periods of play.
In the third period, the vocal crowd of 5,509 watched the home team play some solid defense and kept the 1-0 edge. Toledo's Kyle Page picked up a hooking penalty at 19:14 of the 3rd period and Trenton pulled Jeff Lerg to give the Devils a two-man advantage but the Walleye defense stood strong to pull out the win.
The Walleye held a hefty 42-17 advantage in the game in the shots on goal category.
Toledo went 1-4 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill for the game.
Walleye Wrap-Up: -Walleye goaltender Thomas McCollum stopped 17 of 17 shots on Sunday and is 9-8-1-1 for Toledo this season. -The last Toledo shutout was December 28, 2010 at Cincinnati and the last shutout at home was February 13, 2010. This was only the second 1-0 win in Walleye franchise history - the other was October 24, 2009 (also against Trenton). Mike Hedden, Ryan Stokes, and Evan Rankin are the only three Toledo players that appeared in both games. -Toledo went 2-3-2 versus Trenton this season. Sunday was the final meeting of the year between the two teams. -Toledo will play three games against the Cincinnati Cyclones coming up next weekend with games on the road Friday and Saturday before hosting the Cyclones on Sunday. Cincinnati is currently the #8 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race (Toledo is #10). The top eight teams in the conference qualify for the post-season. -Toledo is four points out of the playoffs after today's game. -Toledo has just two (2) regular season home games left on the schedule - March 27 versus Cincinnati and April 1 versus Elmira. -Toledo is 20-6-3 this season when scoring the first goal of the game. -Ryan Stokes was hit in the nose with a slap shot in the 2nd period and did not return.
Switching Streams: -The Toledo Walleye claimed forward Maxime Tanguay off of waivers from the Utah Grizzlies yesterday. Tanguay started the season with the Alaska Aces appearing in 27 games and notching 4 goals and 11 assists for 15 points. Tanguay then moved to the Utah Grizzlies, appearing in 13 games with 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points. Last season with the Walleye, Tanguay appeared in 66 games, registering 25 goals and 44 assists for 69 points.
