Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. - Two three-run innings did in the Wilson Tobs (8-11, 23-24) on Saturday night as they fell to the Edenton Steamers (18-2, 37-10) by a score of 6-1 at Fleming Stadium.
The Steamers struck for three in the second and third innings to put the game away. In the second Edenton sent eight men to the plate, and came away with four hits. The biggest hit of the inning was a two-run single by 3B Bo Bigham with the bases loaded.
In the third inning the Steamers sent nine to the plate and came away with three hits. Catcher Kevin Whitehead had an RBI single, and 2B Joe Wendle and Bigham were each credited with an RBI as both were walked with the bases loaded by Tobs starter Lance Honeycutt. Honeycutt (1-3) took the loss in his first start of the summer as he couldn't make it out of the third inning, going 2 2/3 and allowing all six runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out eight.
Wilson scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by LF Keith Morrisroe. With the single Morrisroe extended his current on-base streak to 31 games.
The winning pitcher for Edenton was starting LHP Esterlin Paulino (5-1). He pitched five innings and gave up just that one run on four hits and one walk while striking out three. In total a combined nine pitchers were used by both teams.
In the top of the eighth, Steamers 2B Joe Wendle led off with a single, giving him three hits on the night. Wendle had come into the game with 75 hits on the season, and with the three hits tonight he broke the Coastal Plain League's single-season hits record, which had stood at 77. The previous record was set by Wilson's Brandon Scott in 2007.
After a day off tomorrow, the Tobs remain at home Monday night as they take on the Outer Banks Daredevils. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Gil Walker (4-0), making his eighth start of the summer. Mondays are "Miller Lite Mondays" at Fleming Stadium, with 16 ounce Miller Lite drafts available in the beer garden for just $2.00. This Monday will also be "Ladies Night", with all ladies getting in free. Guys, if you want to be part of the fun call the Tobs box office for tickets at 252-291-TOBS.
