Peninsula Pilots to Hold Niemann-Pick Type C Awareness Night
July 23, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Peninsula Pilots News Release
The Peninsula Pilots will remember their former batboy, Kevin Eadie, as they hold Niemann-Pick Type C Awareness Night on Friday, July 29th at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton. Niemann-Pick Type C is a rare neurodegenerative disease that occurs due to the body's inability to metabolize cholesterol. The disease strikes in early childhood, and becomes fatal before or during the early stages of adolescence. Victims lose the ability to eat, talk, and move their limbs at an early age.
In 2002, Kevin Eadie approached Pilots' caretaker Henry Morgan in hopes to be the team's batboy that season. "We weren't sure if we wanted a batboy," Morgan remarked, "because it makes one kid happy and 100 kids unhappy." At the time, Kevin's mother, Brenda Eadie, had purchased tickets to sell in order to raise money for the Kevin Eadie Foundation. Morgan added, "And here was this kid standing outside the office, throwing a ball up in the air. When he asked to be our batboy, we quickly amended our plans."
Kevin passed away in November of 2009, just a month short of his 15th birthday. He was the beloved son of Robert D. Eadie and Brenda D. Eadie.
Representatives of the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation (NNPDF) will be in attendance, and Director of Family Support Services Nadine Hill will speak before the start of the game. All proceeds from the ticket office will be donated to the NNPDF and the Kevin Eadie Foundation. Members of the NNPDF, the Kevin Eadie Foundation, and families with children who suffer from Niemann-Pick Type C will be invited on the field to watch outfield fireworks display after the game.
"Kevin Eadie Night is about raising money, but even more importantly, raising awareness," said Morgan. "That's what we want to do."
