Edenton's Joe Wendle Breaks CPL Single-Season Hits Record

July 23, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain) News Release

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. - The Coastal Plain League announced tonight that Edenton Steamers All-Star second baseman Joe Wendle (West Chester University) broke the league's single-season hits record during a 6-1 win for the Steamers over the Wilson Tobs Saturday night.

With the win, Edenton also clinched the North Division Second Half championship.

Wendle, who headed into tonight's game with 75 hits, needed just three hits to break Wilson's Brandon Scott's record of 77 set back in 2007. He officially broke the record with his third hit - 78th of the season - of the night, a single up the middle in the eighth inning.

Ironically, Scott's record came in a 5-3, 11-inning victory for the Tobs over the Steamers back on August 6, 2007.

On the 2011 summer season, Wendle has been quite successful at the plate as he currently is among the league's Top Five in just about every offensive category; and leads the league in batting average (.424), hits (78), runs scored (44), and on-base percentage (.488). Furthermore, he has 12 doubles, a pair of triples, and three home runs to go with 35 RBIs. Wendle also has 103 total bases, a .560 slugging percentage, 20 walks and eight stolen bases.
