Marlins Bounce Back in Florence
July 23, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release
Florence, S.C. - After being shut out at Capital City Stadium by the Blowfish in Columbia, the Morehead City Marlins completed their road stint in South Carolina by putting together a fifteen-hit performance behind a solid outing from Shawn Armstrong to defeat the Florence RedWolves, 8-3. With the win, the Marlins move to 25-22 overall and 11-8 in the second half, half of a game ahead of the Fayetteville SwampDogs and half of a game behind the Wilmington Sharks in the Coastal Plain League South division second half standings.
Marlins first baseman Chase McDonald propelled Morehead City to a 1-0 start with his second first-inning home run in three days. McDonald finished the night 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, bringing himself within four RBIs of the CPL's single-season record held by Jason Dubois, who drove across 51 for the Rocky Mount RockFish in 1997.
In his first start since winning the 2011 CPL All-Star Game Defensive Player of the Game award, Morehead City ace Shawn Armstrong improved to a record of 5-2 on the summer, tossing eight innings and giving up three runs on four hits. Meanwhile, for the RedWolves, Daniel Palo suffered his first loss of the year, falling to 3-1 on the season.
The Marlins will have the day off on Sunday and go back on the road to take on the Martinsville Mustangs at Hooker Field on Monday. Tuesday, Morehead City takes off for Edenton to take on the number one team in all of summer collegiate baseball, the Steamers. The Marlins took Edenton to 11 innings before losing by one run when the Steamers visited Big Rock Stadium earlier this summer. On Wednesday, the Marlins play the Fayetteville SwampDogs at J. P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville, returning home on Thursday, July 28, to host the Petersburg Generals.
The Morehead City Marlins are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
