Wilson Tobs News Release
FOREST CITY NC - The Wilson Tobs won a back and forth game on Saturday Night in Forest City. The Final was 5-4 and the game went 10 innings. The Tobs improve their overall record to 16-13 and (1-0) in the 2nd half. Meanwhile, Forest City drops to 16-12 overall and (0-1) in the 2nd half.
Forest City started the scoring early against Clay Murphy. Clay walked two of the first three hitters. Clay then committed his first balk of the season. With runners on 2nd and 3rd base Eric Fisher singled home both picking up two RBI's. The Owls led 2-0. The next batter up to bat, Danny Canela doubled home Fisher to make the score 3-0. The Owls lead 3-0 after one full inning of play.
It took until the top of the fifth inning for the Tobs to get in the scorebook. The Tobs got the first two men on base with back-to- back singles, and then Angelo LaBruna laid down a sacrifice bunt. The lead runner was out at third. The throw across to try to double up Labruna went down the right field line, one run scored and Labruna wound up on third base. The next hitter Zac Mitchell knocked home LaBruna with an RBI ground out. The Tobs took advantage of the two base error and cut into the Forest City lead by scoring two runs. The score after five full innings was Wilson 2 and Forest City 3.
The Tobs then evened the score in the sixth when Joe Costigan (Clemson) hit his 2nd homerun of the season. The homer came with one out and one ball and one strike count. The homerun cleared the right field wall and tied the score at three runs apiece.
Wilson took the lead in the ninth 4-3. Alex Jones led off with a walk and then touched home plate when Keith Morrisroe singled Jones home from second.
The lead didn't last long as Forest City lead off the ninth off Tony Wieber with a Double by Axel Johnson. Johnson scored after a double by Bobby Sosnoskie. The Score was tied at 4. Wieber struck out the last two Forest City hitters to send the game to Extra Innings.
Wilson re-took the lead in the 10th inning on an Alex Jones RBI single. The hit was Jones's third of the contest, and it proved to be the game winner.
Wilson held Forest City hitless and scoreless from the first inning through the eighth inning. Jon Levin replaced Murphy after six and two thirds innings and pitched two and one third innings himself not allowing a base hit. In the ninth, it was a different story though as the Tobs saw Tony Wieber give up two doubles and record his first blown save of the season.
The Final Score was Wilson 5 and Forest City 4. Tony Wieber got the win (2-0). The loss went to Cody Poarch (0-1). The game was the first extra inning game on the season for the Wilson Tobs (1-0), and the third for Forest City who fall to (0-1) in the 2nd half.
The Tobs will travel to take on the Fayetteville SwampDogs on Sunday. Game time will be at 7:05 pm. The SwampDogs and Tobs will be meeting for the second time on the season. Wilson won the first match up in Wilson 9-4 on June 29th. This will also be the last meeting between these two teams in the regular season.
