THOMASVILLE, N.C. - Thomasville took a 5-1 lead into the seventh inning and had to survive a furious rally from the Outer Banks as they held on defeat the Daredevils 5-4 on Saturday night at Finch Field.
Outer Banks (0-2) scored three runs unearned runs against Johnny Hoffman to pull to within a run on a Jordan Hankins base hit.
The Daredevils put the tying run at second in the ninth inning against Travis Tingle but couldn't push anything across as the HiToms right hander recorded his sixth save of the season when he got Donnie Corsner to fly out to center to end the game.
Thomasville (2-0) took the lead for good in the sixth inning as they scored a pair of runs to boot Conner Sinclair (L, 2-2) from the game. After Stephen Carmon scored on a single to right field from Cole Sturgeon, Chaz Frank delivered his fourth hit of the night to right field for his third RBI of the game and gave the HiToms the 5-1 lead.
JJ Jankowski (W, 2-1) worked five strong innings for the HiToms striking out six and allowing just one run to help lift the Tommies to the 5-4 win.
Thomasville is off on Sunday and will return to action on Monday night at 7:00 when they host the Gastonia Grizzlies at Finch Field. Fireworks will follow the game and fans are encouraged to wear red to the contest as the Tommies attempt a red out.
