Wilson Tobs News Release

WILSON N.C.- The Wilson Tobs drew twelve walks and had at least two base runners on base every inning, as the Tobs defeated the Fayetteville SwampDogs by a score of 9-4 on Wednesday Night in Fleming stadium.

The Tobs scored first in the third inning when Zac Mitchell walked and came around to score on the Tony Wieber base hit. The Tobs led 1-0 after three innings.

The SwampDogs tied the game in the fifth on a solo home run by Billy Urban. The Tobs added one in the bottom of the inning to take the 2-1 lead. That set the stage for the seventh inning.

The Tobs led 2-1 going into the top of the seventh when Fayetteville struck for two runs to take a 3-2 lead headed to the stretch. The Tobs led off the seventh with Ryan Mathews (who earlier in the game extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games) who reached on a two base error. The next man up was Wieber who singled Mathews to third base. Two consecutive balks plated the tying run and put the go ahead run Wieber at third with no one out. Brian Holberton walked and then Jeff Kremer was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Brandon Elliott. Elliott was also hit by a pitch to force in the go ahead run from third. Keith Morrisroe got a single that plated two more runs and the wacky seventh came to a close in all totaling four runs on two hits with one error and three men left on base. There were also two balks, two walks and two hit batters in the bottom of the seventh alone. The Tobs lead 6-3 headed to the 8th inning.

Just when you thought you have seen everything you can see in a game the eighth inning happened. The Tobs scored three more runs on four walks, a sacrifice fly, two wild pitches, and one double (which lead off the eighth). In all Wilson scored seven runs on three hits in two innings. They took that 9-3 lead into the ninth.

The SwampDogs who had a shot to clinch the CPL southern division scored one run in the ninth to make the score one run closer. The Final was 9-4 Wilson. The Tobs improved their record to 14-13 and will at least be .500 for the first half. The SwampDogs fall to 16-11 and will need a win or a Florence loss to ensure the south crown on Thursday night.

Craig Goodman got the win (2-0) by pitching seven innings of five hit three run baseball. Craig also only walked two hitters and set down five on strikes. The Losing pitcher was Mike Hebert (0-3) who pitched to three hitters and didn't record an out, gave up a hit, three runs, two earned, one walk and also balked twice.

The Wilson Tobs will play host to the Outer Banks Daredevils on Thursday night June 30th. This will be the Finale of the first half for the Tobs. The Tobs will also host yet another Thirsty Thursday, meaning all 16-ounce draft beer in the beer garden is just one dollar and fifty cents. For tickets call (252) 291- TOBS.
