High Point-Thomasville HiToms News Release
ASHEBORO, N.C. - Mike Mayers went eight innings and allowed just two hit, as Thomasville moved above .500 for the first time this season with a 2-0 win over Asheboro on Wednesday night at McCrary Park.
Thomasville (14-13) scored their runs in the third inning off back-to-back doubles from Brock Hebert and Jacob Rogers, which plated Garrett Koster who singled to begin the inning and Hebert scored on the Rogers double to make it 2-0 HiToms after three.
That would be all the run support Mayers (W, 2-2) needed as he made the two runs stand retiring 12 in a row at one point as Asheboro (15-11) was kept off balance all night.
The Copperheads mounted a pair of minor threats in the third as Mike McCarthy singled with one out and moved to second on a pass ball but was stranded there. The other threat was in the seventh when Hunter Ridge singled with one out and moved to second on a pass ball, but Jacob Wilson struck out swinging and Ridge was thrown out trying to steal third.
Mayers finished his night after pitching a scoreless eighth inning as the right hander allowed just two hits not allowing a walk and striking out five for the HiToms. Travis Tingle (S, 5) struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the ninth inning to lift the HiToms to a 2-0 win.
Thomasville is back on the road Thursday night at 7:05 when they travel to Hooker Field and battle with the Martinsville Mustangs. The Tommies return to Finch Field on Friday night at 7:00 as they begin the second half of the season against the Peninsula Pilots.
