Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
WILSON, N.C. - They got the help they wanted elsewhere, but the Fayetteville SwampDogs were unable to help themselves, falling to Wilson 9-3 on Wednesday night at Fleming Stadium and failing to clinch the first-half division title.
Earlier in the day, the Florence RedWolves lost 12-6 to the Wilmington Sharks, reducing the SwampDogs magic number to one. They can still clinch the first-half championship with either a win tomorrow against the Edenton Steamers or another win for Wilmington over Florence.
The SwampDogs actually held a 3-2 lead after the top of the seventh inning, thanks to RBI singles from Nick O'Loughlin and Matt Orloff. But the typically clutch SwampDogs bullpen faltered, allowing four runs in the bottom of the seventh, the big blow a two-run single by Keith Morrisroe that gave Wilson (14-13) a three-run cushion, and then three more in the eighth to put the game out of reach.
Brandon Browne started for Fayetteville (16-11) and did not factor in the decision. He was effectively wild, allowing just two runs on six hits and six walks in six innings of work. He was in position to earn the win, but the Tobs rallied on the trip of Mike Hebert (0-3), Cory Kent, and Alex Belew.
Billy Urban hit his first homerun of the season to get the SwampDogs on the board in the top of the fifth off of Wilson starter Craig Goodman (2-0). Goodman allowed three runs on five hits in seven innings to earn the victory.
The SwampDogs plated a run in the ninth on an RBI single from pinch-hitter Cody Hudson, but could not muster a significant rally.
The score could have easily been much worse for the SwampDogs. Wilson had at least two runners reach base in every inning, and Wilson managed to come to the plate 13 times with the bases loaded. They left 15 runners on base on the night.
The SwampDogs wrap up the season's first half at home against Edenton tomorrow night. It's the fourth annual Green Night, and the first 500 fans will receive a reusable tote bag courtesy of Fayetteville PWC, FAMPO, and Restore Warehouse. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
