Tobs Open Second Half with Victory
June 30, 2012 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C - The Wilson Tobs pushed across a run in the seventh inning to pick up a 4-3 victory over the Wilmington Sharks to open the second half of the Coastal Plain League season on Saturday night at Historic Fleming Stadium.
Wilson (1-0, 10-19) entered the seventh inning tied and was able to score the eventual winning run when Harry Slade doubled down the left field line to plate Geoff Jimenez who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
Wilmington (0-1, 16-12) took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning as Aaron Preston, who led off the inning with a single scored on Connor Mitchell's base hit to centerfield. But the lead was short lived as the Tobs rallied back in their half of the sixth inning to knot the score on an Aaron Rea double which brought Zach Houchins home to score.
Brett Ash (W, 2-1) worked eight strong innings for the Tobs allowing just three runs and striking out eight. Wilson newcomer Christian Oliver hurled a perfect ninth inning to earn his first save of the season.
The Tobs are back at home on Sunday afternoon at 5:05 when they step outside of league play to take on the Mooresville All-Americans. Wilson will return to CPL play on Monday night at 7:05 when they welcome the Morehead City Marlins to Historic Fleming Stadium.
The Wilson Tobs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both the players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 52 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and CY Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
