'Dogs Sweep Season Series With Catawba Valley

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs improved to 2-0 against the Catawba Valley Stars in 2012, defeating the CVCL team 12-11 in a wild contest at "The Swamp" on Saturday night.Fayetteville tallied nine hits and twelve runs in a game that saw both teams combine for nine errors. The Dogs were hit-by-pitch victims on eight separate occasions.After scoring three runs through the games' first two innings, the Dogs batted around in the third frame, scoring eight runs. The inning began with four consecutive base hits by Tyler Ding (Tampa), Brian Bullard (Albany), Jacob Golliday (Francis Marion) and Stephen Frey (Monmouth), as the team took an 11-4 lead into the fourth inning.The Stars battled back, however, as they were able to get within one run of the Dogs in the ninth inning before James Simmons (Hardin-Simmons) slammed the door for Fayetteville.The Dogs auctioned off special Wounded Warrior Project jerseys, as the game-used tops were rewarded to the highest bidding fans upon the game's final out. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
