Tobs Lose One-Run Battle to Generals

WILSON, N.C. (July 26, 2011) - Catcher Jorge Saez belted a solo homerun over the left field wall in the top of the eighth to lift the Petersburg Generals (6-13, 10-37) to a 2-1 victory over the Wilson Tobs (8-13, 23-26) on Tuesday night at Fleming Stadium.

Saez came to the plate with one out in the top of the eighth to face Tobs LHP Jon Levin (3-2). Levin had come on in relief to begin the inning after Wilson starter RHP Clay Murphy threw 112 pitches through seven innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out 10. Already with a single on the night, Saez put control of the game back in the hands of the Generals by launching his third homer of the year, and the first long ball hit off of Levin this summer.

The Tobs had tied the game at one in the bottom of the sixth. With one out in the inning, catcher Brian Holberton and CF Ryan Mathews were each issued walks by Petersburg starter RHP Matthew Hewitt. Hewitt was then pulled from the game by Generals manager Bob Smith, despite pitching a no-hitter up till that point. In came LHP John Hamilton, and he gave up a single up the middle to the first batter he faced, LF Joe Costigan. The single from Costigan drove home Holberton from second knotting the game at one. The run was charged to Hewitt, so his final line was 5.1 innings, no hits, one run (earned), four walks, and six strikeouts. Hamilton (1-1) got credit for the win.

Petersburg had taken its initial lead in the second inning. With one out 1B Corbin Shive walked, and was then pushed into scoring position when LF Jack Cleary doubled for the first hit of the game off Murphy. With two in scoring position and still only one out, 2B Austin McGowan drove Shive home with a groundout to short, making it 1-0 Generals.

LHP Richard Teasley pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to pick up his first save of the summer for Petersburg. The loss was the third-in-a-row (all at home) for Wilson, which finishes its season series against the Generals with a record of 5-3. Tobs 2B Keith Morrisroe extended his current on-base streak to 33 games with a walk in the third, which ties the team record set last season by Matt Zeblo.

The Tobs head on the road tomorrow to take on the Peninsula Pilots for the first game of a home-and-home series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. On the hill for Wilson will be LHP Brice Rivenbark (2-4), making his tenth start of the summer. The Tobs will return to Fleming Stadium Thursday night to host the Pilots for the last "Thirsty Thursday" of the summer. Call the Tobs box office for tickets at 252-291-TOBS.
