Tobs Fall To Steamers on a Walk-Off Walk 7-6

EDENTON, NC - The Edenton Steamers got all the breaks at Historic Hicks Field. The Steamers won in the bottom of the bottom of the 13th inning on a walk off base on balls. The game was played in a tidy four hours and thirty-four minutes. Edenton won 7-6.

The Wilson Tobs got on the scoreboard first when Keith Morrisroe reached on an error to extend his on base streak to 36 games; Brian Holberton hit his first homerun of the season to deep right field. The homer made the score 2-0 Wilson.

In the second inning, a pitch hit Steve Nikorak and then Jeff Bouton hit a two-run homer of his own to deep center field. That was the second two run homerun in as many innings for the Tobs. Wilson led 4-0 after an inning and a half.

In the bottom of the second inning the Edenton Steamers got on the board. Adam Giacalone singled, and then scored on a Nathan Burns double to left field. The score after two complete innings.

Edenton closed the gap to two runs in the bottom of the third inning when Ryan Brenner lead off by being hit by a pitch. Joe Wendle walked and then both runners stole a base. With the runners now on second and third Bo Bigham hit a sacrifice fly to deep center. Brenner raced home to score the Steamers second run of the game. The score now stood at 4-2 in favor of the Tobs.

Edenton tied the score by taking five consecutive walks. Tobs starting pitcher Garrett Davis gave the first four to Edenton. Chad Girodo then walked the first man he faced in relief. In all Edenton scored two runs and tied the score at 4 runs apiece headed to the fifth inning.

The Wilson Tobs took the lead back on another homerun. This time it was the CPL leader in homers, Ryan Mathews who hit a long drive to right field. The opposite field homerun was Mathews 15th of the season, which now brings him just two shy of tying the all time CPL mark of 17. Wilson led 5-4 at the stretch.

In the eighth manager Bruce Johnson elected to run out his closer Tony Wieber for a chance at a two-inning save. Wieber retired the first two batters he faced, but then Kevin Whitehead, the Edenton catcher, hit a game tying homerun to centerfield. The homer was Edenton's fifth overall hit, but the first hit since the second inning. The score was now tied at 5 heading to the ninth inning.

The Wilson half of the inning was very quiet as the Tobs went 1-2-3. Tyler Saltsman entered the game to pitch for the Tobs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bigham got a base hit and then stole second. The Tobs then elected to intentionally walk Giacalone to set up a double play. Nathan Burns was called out on strikes, and then the bases were loaded when a pitch hit Brian Blasik. Zach Stewart pinch-hit with the bases loaded and promptly popped out to Brandon Elliot at third base to have the game head to extra innings.

The Tobs got a run in the top of the 12th inning when Joe Costigan laced a lead off single to left field. Costigan scored after Mathews laid down a sacrifice bunt. The throw to try to retire Mathews was thrown down the right field line to enable Costigan to score and Mathews to get all the way to third base. The Tobs led 6-5 heading to the bottom of the 12th inning.

In the Bottom of the 12th Edenton's first two hitters were retired by Brice Rivenbark. Brett Christopher walked, and then stole second base. Ryan Brenner was then struck out swinging but the third strike was in the dirt. Keith Morrisroe's throw to retire Brenner went into right field and scoring all the way from second was Christopher tying the game once again at 6.

The Steamers won the game in the bottom of the 13th inning. The bases were loaded and Brice Rivenbark walked in the winning run. Rivenbark fell to (2-6) and the winning pitcher was Adam Giacalone who improved to (1-0)

The Wilson Tobs will remain on the road as they travel to Hampton, Virginia to take on the Peninsula Pilots. The game will be the final meeting between the two squads. The Tobs hold the season series lead over the Pilots four games to three. No pitching match up has been announced at this time.
