Marlins Stymie Generals in 6-5 Win
July 29, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins took an early hit, falling behind the Petersburg Generals 5-1 early in Thursday evening's contest, but came back to tie it and score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. With the win, the Marlinswho were the ninth-ranked team in the league based on playoff criteria before Thursday's gamenudge back into the playoff race and into the seventh seed entering Friday.
Two hits and two runs batted in from each left fielder Grant Clyde and shortstop Joe Sclafani proved to be the difference in the ballgame. Sclafani, who hit home runs in each of his two games prior to Thursday night, finished 2-for-3 at the plate, sending runs to the plate with a sacrifice fly and his RBI single to lift the Marlins to victory in the bottom of the eighth.
Of course, the Marlins still had to stop the Generals from scoring in the top of the ninth. Luckily, Adam Norton needed to cap off his incredible performance by striking out three batters in a row to retire the side, which he did in the ninth. The right-hander out of Notre Dame relieved Christian Malbrough with two outs in the fifth and put in one of the best relief outings of the Coastal Plain League season. Norton threw 4.1 innings, did not give up a run, allowed just two hits, and struck out eight without any walks.
The Marlins travel to Fayetteville to challenge the SwampDogs for the final time this summer on Friday. Saturday, Morehead City returns to Big Rock Stadium to host the Florence RedWolves. Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday see matchups with the Wilmington Sharks to wrap up the regular season for the Marlins. Both Monday and Tuesday, the games will take place in Morehead City, whereas Sunday's competition will be held inside the "Shark Tank" at Buck Hardee Field.
