Tobs Escape Columbia with Wild Win

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Wilson Tobs scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning and survived a furious Columbia Blowfish rally to earn a wild, 12-11 victory on Tuesday night at Capital City Stadium.

With the game tied at 10, Wilson (18-29, 9-10) pushed across a duet of run in the top of the eighth against Blowfish reliever, Adam Albers. Collins Cuthrell and Aaron Rea began the frame with back-to-back singles ahead of Cambric Moye who tried to lay down a bunt however the throw from the pitcher sailed down the right field line allowing Cuthrell to cross with the run ahead of Rea who was gunned down at the dish.

Later in the frame, the Tobs were able to add an insurance run as Moye moved up to third on Mike Dunster's groundout to the right side and one batter later, the Wilson back stop crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 12-10, Tobs.

The Blowfish brought the go ahead run to the plate in the ninth inning against Christian Oliver however, Columbia could not scratch as the Tobs won a wild one, 12-11.

Down by six runs after three innings, Columbia (26-18, 9-7) came storming back scoring single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth before knotting the game at 10 with a three-run seventh inning. Federico Castagnini delivered the game-tying hit with a two-run double to right center.

Wilson broke open two run game in the third as they scored four runs. Trey Whaley began the scoring the parade with a single to drive in a run. Bryant Noteboom followed two batters late with a two-run double to the gap in left centerfield.

Columbia took a two-run lead in the first inning against Tobs left-hander Phillip Williams on a two-run single by Tre-Von Johnson. However, that advantage for the Blowfish was short lived as Wilson came storming back with a six run second inning to claim a lead they would not give up.

In the six run frame that chased Blowfish starter Joel Seddon from the game, Moye delivered an RBI double ahead of a Dunster single to plate a run. Zack Lee provided the key knock in the frame shooting a double to the gap in left center to give Wilson the four-run advantage before the Tobs held on to win late in the game.

The Tobs return to Historic Fleming Stadium on Wednesday night when they welcome the Peninsula Pilots to Wilson - first pitch is slated for 7:05.

The Wilson Tobs are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both the players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and CY Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
