Blowfish Fall to Tobs in Offensive Shootout

COLUMBIA, S.C.- The Columbia Blowfish fell to the Wilson Tobs Tuesday night 12-11 at Historic Capital City Stadium. The loss is the second straight for the Blowfish who stay in first place with the Gastonia loss.

The Blowfish got on the board first in the bottom of the first with two runs off of Tobs starting pitcher Phillip Williams. Williams went four innings giving up five runs on six hits while striking out three. Williams did not factor into the decision.

The Tobs answered in the top of the second with six runs of their own against Blowfish starter Joel Seddon. Seddon lasted just an inning and two thirds giving up six runs, four earned, on seven hits while striking out three. The Blowfish answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half to cut the Tobs lead to 6-4.

The Blowfish would add four more in the third to take a 10-4 lead against reliever Chase Rhitarchik. Rhitarchik went three and a third innings giving up four runs on three hits while striking out three.

Down six runs the Blowfish began to fight back scoring a single run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before getting three runs in the seventh to tie the game at ten. Chris Armstrong pitched two innings for the Tobs giving up two runs on five hits while striking out two. Aaron LaBrie then pitched two innings giving up four runs on five hits while striking out one. LaBrie would get the win for the Tobs.

After the Blowfish tied the game in the seventh the Tobs would answer with two runs off of Adam Albers to take a 12-10 lead. Albers went two and a third innings giving up two unearned runs on three hits while striking out three. Jeff Kinley who went two thirds of an inning relieved Albers. Connor Sulivan pitched a perfect ninth while striking out one.

The Blowfish cut the Tobs lead to one in the bottom of the eighth and got a man on in the ninth but could not score the games tying run. Federico Castagnini led the Blowfish at the plate going 3-4 with four RBIs and a run scored.

The Columbia Blowfish are in their seventh season at Historic Capital City Stadium and are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 51 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
