Edenton Steamers News Release
FLORENCE, SC - Florence (23-24, 10-9) scored two times in each of the first two innings on two errors a two-run single by Michael Morris and defeated the Edenton Steamers (31-14, 13-6) 4-2 on Tuesday Night at Cormell Field at Sparrow Stadium.
With one out Connor Bright reached on a three base error by Steamers right fielder Madison Beaird when he could not catch a line drive to right field. A walk and another error charged to Troy Scribner (Sacred Heart University) loaded the bases and Morris knocked in two to give Florence an early 2-0 lead.
The RedWolves, after their two-run first inning, added two more runs in the bottom of the second of off Scribner. Two singles in the inning followed by a sacrifice bunt had the 'Wolves in prime position to add to their lead. Connor Bright hit an RBI ground out for a 3-0 Florence lead and a passed ball charged to Steamers catcher Wilbur Nevarez (Lubbock Christian University) allowed the fourth run to score.
Edenton picked up just one hit through the first four innings, a single by Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) in the fourth inning against Lou Trivino.
Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) led off the Steamers fifth with a single, the second hit of the night for Edenton. Beaird stole his ninth bag of the year when he swiped second base and moved to third on a passed ball. Nevarez picked up his 10th RBI of the season with a ground out to first base one batter later.
Beaird again started a rally for the Steamers in the top of seventh with his second single of the night. Beaird stole his second bag of the night and tenth of the season and scored on a Michael Massi (Mercer University) RBI single that chased Trivino and cut the lead to 4-2 'Wolves.
Scribner exited after six complete innings and at one point from the second inning until two out in the sixth inning had retired 14 of 15 RedWolves that came up to the plate. An Anthony Cheky single was the only man who reached in that time frame. He departed trailing 4-2.
DJ Johnson (Mercer University) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Scribner, striking out three and allowing one walk and one single.
The RedWolves saves leader Phillip Wilson entered the game in the ninth and retired the Steamers in order to earn his fifth save of the season in the 4-2 RedWolves win in the only meeting this season between the two teams.
Leading the way offensively for the Steamers was Madison Beaird, going two-for-four with two singles, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Michael Massi had an RBI single, going one-for-three and Wilbur Nevarez added an RBI, going 0-for-two with a walk.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 16th season in 2012, the CPL features 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 53 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
