Trenton Titans News Release
Trenton, NJ - The Trenton Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, continued to roll Wednesday night at the Sun National Bank Center, downing the Reading Royals for the second time in five days to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Blake Kessel opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest, putting the rebound of an Andy Bombach shot past Reading goalkeeper Phillip Grubauer (21 saves, 0-2) on the power play to give the Titans an early lead.
The Royals power play responded, as David Marshall buried a pass that teammate Yannick Tifu slid through Niko Hovinen's crease near the end of the first period.
Marcel Noebels scored the game winner for Trenton, slipping behind the Reading defense and receiving a stretch pass from Bombach before beating Grubauer, his teammate from the German under-20 National Team, with a quick forehand-backhand move on the breakaway.
Titans captain Ray DiLauro added an empty netter with thirty seconds left in the game, cementing the victory and ending a late Reading flurry.
Hovinen stopped eleven of twelve shots before leaving the game early in the second period after catching a shot up high. Scott Wedgewood was strong in relief, turning aside 20 shots and shutting out Reading for the rest of the game. Wedgewood earned "First Ace" honors for his second win of the season.
The Royals (0-3) edged out the Titans in shots, 32-24, while going 1-for-3 on the power play. The Titans penalty kill is now operating at 87.5% (14-for-16) on the season. Trenton was 1-for-5 on the man advantage and has cashed in on 20% of their opportunities for the season.
The Titans will look to continue their winning ways on the road this weekend, as they head to Evansville Friday to take on the IceMen before travelling to Cincinatti Saturday for a showdown with the Cyclones.
The Titans return home on Friday, October 26 as they host the Toledo Walleye, with faceoff scheduled for 7:05 pm.
