West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN- A two out, four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh helped the Fort Wayne Tincaps defeat the West Michigan Whitecaps, 7-5, in the first morning game of the 2009 season. Each team has now won a game in the four game series. The loss drops the âCaps overall record to 8-3 while the Tincaps improve to 11-1.
A sunny, cool morning greeted the teams at Parkview Field as the first pitch sailed across at 11:05 a.m. Just like the temperature, it took a little while for both teams to heat up offensively.
The Whitecaps would be the first to score, putting 4 runs across in the top of the fourth. Bryan Pounds delivered an RBI single to score Brent Wyatt, Billy Nowlin drew a bases-loaded walk, and Joe Bowen sliced a RBI single to right with two outs for a 4-0 lead.
But Fort Wayne countered with three runs themselves, combining four walks and two hits together with an RBI ground-out to make the score 4-3.
In the seventh, The Whitecaps would add another run when Gustavo Nunez scampered home on a well executed bunt from Brent Wyatt.
Down 5-3, the Tincaps had their first two hitters of the seventh fly out to center. But the next 5 hitters would reach base safely, two on walks, and Fort Wayne scored 4 times to go ahead, 7-5.
Whitecaps starter Luke Putkonen lasted 3.1 innings, surrendering 4 hits, 4 walks, and striking out 4.
Relief pitcher Anthony Shawler took the loss. He's now 1-1.
Six different Whitecaps had a hit. Bryan Pounds, Billy Nowlin, Joe Bowen, and Brent Wyatt all had a RBI.
Game three of the series is set for Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. at Parkview Field.
