South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Lansing, MI - The South Bend Silver Hawks exploded for six runs and seven hits in the fifth inning on their way to an 8-1 victory in game one of the series against the Lansing Lugnuts. South Bend set a new season high for hits with 15 as they improved to 4-7 on the year.
Already leading 2-1 on RBI doubles by Alfredo Marte and Nelson Gomez in the fourth inning, the Silver Hawks sent 10 batters to the plate in the fifth, with the first five each picking up base hits.
Isaias Asencio started the rally with a single and scored on Reynaldo Navarro's triple for a 3-1 lead. Brendan Duffy's single brought in Navarro, and Jake Elmore followed with a single to put runners at first and third with nobody out.
In came reliever Jonas Cuotto (ND), but he would fair no better. Alberto Diaz doubled to make it 5-1, and Justin Parker's sacrifice fly made it a 6-1 Silver Hawks lead. Marte then followed with a triple and Gomez added his second double of the game for an 8-1 lead.
Marte finished a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Gomez also finished 3-for-5, with two doubles, a single, and two RBI. Navarro's 3-for-4 night consisted of two doubles and a triple with an RBI for the Hawks.
Through all the offensive fireworks, South Bend starter Trevor Harden (WP, 2-1) turned in a spectacular outing. Harden allowed just one run in seven innings -- a home run in the second by Yohermyn Chavez - with five strikeouts and one walk.
Sean Morgan (ND) pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out four, to preserve the 8-1 victory for South Bend.
The series continues with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 6:05 PM at Oldsmobile Park. The Silver Hawks will send a couple of lefties to the mound with LHP Wade Miley (0-0, 2.53 ERA) in game one and LHP Taylor Sinclair (0-0, 3.60 ERA) in game two. Lansing counters with LHP John Anderson (0-1, 1.80 ERA) in game one and LHP Chuck Huggins (0-1, 3.12 ERA) in game two.
