Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The South Bend Silver Hawks (4-7) exploded for six runs in the fifth inning to back up a splendid effort by starter Trevor Harden, defeating the host Lansing Lugnuts (2-8), 8-1, in the opener of a four-game series at Oldsmobile Park.
Harden (2-1) struck out five over seven strong innings to notch the victory, reached only for an early Yohermyn Chavez solo home run.
That homer by Chavez, his second of the season, put Lansing up 1-0 in the second inning. The lead didn't last long.
Alfredo Marte and Nelson Gomez provided consecutive two-out RBI doubles in the fourth inning to give South Bend the lead against Lansing starter Henderson Alvarez (1-2).
And then, the deluge.
After an error by first baseman Mike McDade put Isaias Asencio aboard to start the fifth, Reynaldo Navarro tripled his teammate home. Brandon Duffy singled in Navarro for a 4-1 lead, and Jake Elmore's subsequent single knocked out Alvarez. Facing reliever Jonas Cuotto, Alberto Diaz brought in Duffy with an RBI double and Justin Parker plated Elmore with a sacrifice fly. An RBI triple by Marte supplied the fifth run of the inning, and Gomez capped off the scoring with his second run-scoring double.
Catcher Ryan Babineau was the only Silver Hawks starter without a base hit in the game, with Marte, Gomez, and Navarro each collecting three hits apiece.
Kenny Wilson collected a pair of hits for the Lugnuts in the losing cause.
